The Community Development Department and the Town Clerk's office work together to assist individuals and organizations looking to start a business or that already operate a business in our Town.

Home Occupations

Home occupations are defined in our Zoning Ordinance as any occupation or profession (including retail sales unless otherwise specified), which is carried on by a member(s) of the family residing in the dwelling; and which is clearly incidental and secondary to the use of the dwelling for residential purposes and does not change the character thereof. 

Home Occupations must also consider the Performance Standards listed in Article 10, Section 14 (PDF). 

Individuals who wish to start a home occupation must complete an application for review by the Code Enforcement Officer. For convenience, individuals can apply for business permits online here. Once approval has been granted, the individual must register their business with the Town Clerk's Office and obtain any necessary licenses as required by either Maine State Statutes or the Town of Kennebunk’s Ordinances. 

Starting a New Business 

If you are looking to start a business in Town (Home Occupations, see above), please submit an application for review by the Code Enforcement Officer. This will be reviewed to determine if the business use is allowed in the Zoning District where the property is located. For convenience, individuals can apply for business permits online here. Once approval has been granted, the individual must register their business with the Town Clerk's Office and obtain any necessary licenses, as required by either Maine State Statutes or the Town of Kennebunk’s Ordinances.
