Moving to Kennebunk
The following information may be helpful if you are moving to town.
- Historic Preservation District - If you purchase a home in the Kennebunk Historic Preservation Overlay District any changes made to the property (such as architecture, color, materials, or landscaping) must be brought to the Historic Preservation Committee for approval. View the Historic Preservation District guidelines here (PDF).
- Kitchen Composting - The Town has contracted with Agri-Cycle to offer a residential composting service. Residents can bring any 5-gallon bucket with kitchen compost to the Transfer Station; located at 36 Sea Rd and dispose of kitchen compost for $1/per 5 gallon bucket. You can also take compost by the 5-gallon bucket for $2/per bucket.
- Notify the Post Office of New Address - The Kennebunk Post Office is located in Post Office Square, (207) 985-2092. The West Kennebunk Post office is located on Alfred Rd, (207) 985-7255.
- Obtain a Beach Parking Permit - Beach permits are required each year from June 15th through September 15th to park at Mother's Beach, Middle Beach and Gooch's Beach. Beach permits may be purchased at the Tax Collector's Office or the Town Clerk's Office. Residents will be asked for your Driver's License/State ID and proof of residency.
- Obtain a Maine Driver's License - The Bureau of Motor Vehicles issues licenses and identification cards. The closest office is located at 63 Portland Road, Kennebunk. For questions about obtaining a driver's license contact (207) 985-4890.
- Obtain a Maine Vehicle Registration - If you are moving to Maine from another state, you have 30 days to obtain a Maine vehicle registration. To register your vehicle please visit us at Town Hall. You will need the following paperwork: previous registration, vehicle title, insurance card, and proof of Kennebunk residency (something with your name and physical address in Kennebunk; cannot be a P.O. Box). Here you will pay excise tax. If you have a lien on your vehicle, you will need to provide the name and address of the lienholder. Once excise tax has been paid you will need to visit a branch office of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to finish the process. The closest BMV is located at 63 Portland Road, Kennebunk where you will finish your registration and receive your license plates and plate stickers.
- Register Dog(s) - Visit the Town Clerk's office to register your dog in person, or register your dog online from October 15th -January 31st of each year. You must present a current rabies certificate and a spay/neuter certificate at registration (if applicable). Dog registrations for altered dogs are $6.00/year and registrations for unaltered dogs are $11.00/year. A late fee of $25 per dog is imposed after January 31st of each year.
- Register to Vote - You may register to vote at the Town Clerk's Office. Please bring photo identification and proof of your Kennebunk street address (cannot be a P.O. Box). You may also register to vote at the polls on election day with the correct proof of residency.
- Taxes - Real Estate and Personal Property taxes are due semi-annually. Due dates are typically the first Friday in October and the First Friday in April. Tax bills are mailed to the taxpayer of record as of April 1 each year. Please refer to your closing documents or contact your Real Estate or Title agent to determine your responsibility for taxes. For taxpayers that have taxes in escrow, you must forward your tax bill to your mortgage company. If you have owned a home in Maine for 12 months prior to April 1st, you may apply (PDF) for a Homestead Exemption.
- Trash/Recycling Pick-up - The Town has an automated trash and zero-sort (also known as single-sort) recycling collection program. Pine Tree Waste Services provides this residential service. Each residence is issued two 64-gallon wheeled containers. One container is used for trash and the other for recycling. Collection is weekly, with pickup occurring Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Find your collection day using the route schedule organized by street name. Town Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) trash bags are required for trash only. Place your trash in town bags and place those bags in your trash container for pickup. If you prefer to bring your trash to the transfer station located at 36 Sea Road, the facility will accept household trash provided it is in the Town's PAYT trash bags. Recycling is zero-sort, which means you may combine all of your paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, tin and aluminum and place those items in the container designated for recycling.
